Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Senso-ji Temple and Ginza are good opportunities to explore the local culture. For shopping fun, head to Asakusa or Takeshita Street. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Tokyo: Nikko Base (in Nikko) and Ghibli Museum Mitaka (in Mitaka). There's lots more to do: take in nature's colorful creations at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, make a trip to Meiji Jingu Shrine, get engrossed in the history at Edo-Tokyo Museum, and wander the streets of Odaiba District.

Washington, USA to Tokyo is an approximately 19-hour flight. You'll lose 14 hours traveling from Washington to Tokyo due to the time zone difference. Plan for somewhat warmer nights when traveling from Washington in March since evenings lows in Tokyo dip to 43°F. Though a fairly large city in its own right, Saitama has become known primarily for its proximity to the capital, Tokyo.
Step out of the city life by going to Kamiyatsuno Okusuu and Minamisawa Ajisai Mountain. Get a sense of the local culture at Hase Kannon and Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Saitama: Mt. Takao (in Hachioji), Ochiai River and Minamisawa Springs (in Higashikurume) and Kiyose Sunflower Farm (in Kiyose). And it doesn't end there: head outdoors with Mt. Kumotori, play a few rounds at Murasaki Country Club Murasaki Ayame Course, and take in the dramatic scenery at Hijiri Falls.
