Getting from Nagoya to Kyoto by train takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Nagoya in August, plan for a bit warmer days in Kyoto, with highs around 39°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 29°C. You will leave for Tokyo on the 5th (Thu).

Kofu — 2 nights

Old historic castles and Shinto shrines dominate the sightseeing in Kofu, a city fringed by mountains on all sides.
On the 9th (Mon), take an in-depth tour of Miyakoen, see the interesting displays at Yamanashi Prefectural Museum Kajiam, and then delve into the lush surroundings at Yamanashi Prefecture Forest Park Kanegawa no Mori. On your second day here, take in the dramatic natural features at Kakuembo, then appreciate the views at Itajiki Valley, and then examine the collection at Nirasaki Omura Art Museum.

Drive from Tokyo to Kofu in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. When traveling from Tokyo in August, plan for a bit cooler days and about the same nights in Kofu: temperatures range from 29°C by day to 26°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 11th (Wed) so you can drive to Matsumoto.

Matsumoto — 1 night

A castle town, Matsumoto possesses one of the best-preserved feudal structures in the country, and maintains its historical attractions and traditions while simultaneously exuding a modern, cosmopolitan charm.
Start off your visit on the 11th (Wed): take in the awesome beauty at Chogatake, get outside with Karasawa Carl, and then take in the awesome beauty at Hotaka Mountain Range.
