Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Step out of Tokyo to go to Mitaka and see Ghibli Museum Mitaka, which is approximately 40 minutes away. Have a day of magic on the 10th (Sun) at Tokyo Disneyland. And it doesn't end there: get engrossed in the history at Edo-Tokyo Museum, take a stroll through Takeshita Street, stroll around Ueno Park, and don't miss a visit to Ameya Yokocho (Ameyoko).

Montreal, Canada to Tokyo is an approximately 15-hour flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 14 hours traveling from Montreal to Tokyo. In October, Tokyo is somewhat warmer than Montreal - with highs of 26°C and lows of 18°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Tue) early enough to catch the flight to Takayama.

Takayama — 3 nights

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Get out of town with these interesting Takayama side-trips: Shirakawa-mura (Ogimachi Castle Old Site Observatory, Nagase house, &more) and Matsumoto (Taisho Pond, Pond Tashiro, &more). There's still lots to do: admire the landmark architecture of Takayama Jinya, don't miss a visit to Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine, visit Sanmachi Suji, and get to know the fascinating history of Higashiyama Walking Course.

Traveling by car from Tokyo to Takayama takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive; or take a train. In October in Takayama, expect temperatures between 24°C during the day and 16°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Fri) so you can go by car to Nagoya.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Kick off your visit on the 16th (Sat): contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, then steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and then steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. On the 17th (Sun), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: don't miss a visit to Nijo Castle and then wander the streets of Arashiyama.

You can take a train from Nagoya to Kyoto in 1.5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or drive; or take a bus. In October, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 27°C, while at night they dip to 18°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Mon) early enough to drive to Nara.

Nara — 1 night

The country's first established capital, Nara houses some of the most storied buildings and natural attractions in Japan, with eight World Heritage Sites in total.
Start off your visit on the 18th (Mon): see the interesting displays at Todaiji Temple Cultural Center, pause for some photo ops at Todai-ji Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kofuku-ji Temple, then walk around Nara Park, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kasuga Grand Shrine.

Hakone-machi — 2 nights

Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Kick off your visit on the 19th (Tue): explore the galleries of Hakone Sekisho and Hakone Sekisho Museum, contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Ashinoko, contemplate the long history of Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, then admire the masterpieces at The Hakone Open-Air Museum, and finally stroll through Sengokuhara. Keep things going the next day: make a trip to Owaku-dani Valley, take some stellar pictures from Hakone Ropeway, then cruise along Hakone Skyline, then revel in the low prices at Gotemba Premium Outlets, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Choanji Temple.
