The station has been operating since 1956, and it is important for winter forecasting, since cold fronts approach South Africa from that side. If you visit it, you won't see any locals, as the island is uninhabited other than the station crew, which arrives by boat once year. Nice place for refugees - a calm place far away from any other land, never hot and never really cold with refreshing west and south-west winds, edible birds, mammals, plants, fish.
