Create an itinerary including Matsumoto Castle
Visit the 16th century complex of Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most renowned landmarks, nicknamed "Crow Castle" because of its dark facade. Admire the imposing structure, the oldest castle remaining in Japan, notable for occupying a spot on a plain rather than the more usual hilltop. As you step inside the main building, you'll notice that the interior features authentic wooden pillars and staircases, while the second floor contains a collection of guns. Climb to the top of the main keep for panoramic views of the surroundings. See Matsumoto Castle and all Matsumoto has to offer by arranging your trip with our Matsumoto online trip itinerary maker.

  • Very cool. All information has English translation so your not Google translating everything. Stairs are very dangerous but the staff is there awaiting to help you if needed. Beautiful area castle is one of a kind and lots of places to relax and take some amazing pictures.
  • I LOVE old castles. This is one of the top and most picturesque castles in Japan. But I will see 50 of the if I get the chance to see them in my lifetime. The Castle is in excellent shape and one of the very few that is virtually intact throughout its life. Himeji Castle being the other that made it through the years. The History of the castle is heard through their intercoms system, there are guided tours as well. The location opens at 9am to 5pm but recommend coming at 9-11am before the crowds. If you have not been in a Japanese Castle, be prepared for some very steep steps , some very high steps and some slippery steps. Leave what you can in the lockers by the gift shop as the steps are narrow and not made for tall people, the more hands you have available to make the climb and decent, the better.
