Trip Planner: Central America / Guatemala / Sacatepequez Department / Antigua / Iglesia de La Merced
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. Iglesia de La Merced reviews
this old church is beautiful but really shines at night. it presents some pretty good opportunities to take some remarkable pictures, too bad we couldnt get inside it.

Beautiful church located right near the Santa Catalina Arch! I visited with my family and we loved it! On the weekends it is actually open, so that you can head on in and enjoy a service!
