See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. Beautiful church located right near the Santa Catalina Arch! I visited with my family and we loved it! On the weekends it is actually open, so that you can head on in and enjoy a service!
