Favored by the locals, Japanese Covered Bridge stands as one of the most famous city landmarks. The iconic bridge was built in the end of the 16th century to connect the Japanese and Chinese areas of the town. A legend has it that the bridge sits on the back of an ancient monstrous earthquake-causing dragon. A small, simple temple inside the bridge is dedicated to a weather god, who is believed to have the power to stop earthquakes. The wooden pagoda roof and the original ornamentation are well-preserved and the arched shape of the road was restored in 1986. Notice the pairs of guardian statues on each entrance, representing dogs and monkeys. There are two explanations for this--one is that these are the years in the Chinese calendar when the bridge was begun and finished and the other one is that these are the Zodiac signs of many Chinese emperors. Extremely pretty and astounding to see how silk is made. Don't need to spend too much time here but it's usually part of a tour. We went on our own because it's just a 5 min walk from our apartment. Tip; they will try to charge you 100,000 vnd just to go in but tell them you thought it was free and ask if you can look in the shop. If you buy something they let you look around for nothing. If you like scarves you have to buy one from here. You'll never find a silk scarf this cheap in Australia, or most western countries. And they are beautiful.

This is one of the main attractions in Hoi an. This Japanese bridge is one of the main reasons people visit the area there is a lot of shopping around restaurants but there are a lot of tourists just don't expect to walk over the bridge without jostling around others. I did enjoy the small boutique stores around and over the bridge. The bridge is free to cross.
