The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Nijo Castle and Sanjusangendo Temple will appeal to history buffs. Step out of Kyoto to go to Nara and see Todai-ji Temple, which is approximately 1 hour away. And it doesn't end there: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji, admire the masterpieces at Kyoto National Museum, wander the streets of Arashiyama, and visit Gion.

Skiing enthusiasts traveling in Japan should consider a trip to Hakuba-mura: tucked away in the Northern Alps, this village hosted several competitions during the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympics.
Appreciate the collections at Matsumoto Folkcraft Museum (Matsumoto Mingei-kan) and Rakusuitei Art Museum. Matsumoto Castle and Toyama Glass Art Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture.
