The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Sanjusangendo Temple will appeal to history buffs. Do some cultural sightseeing at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Kinkaku-ji. There's lots more to do: make a trip to Nijo Castle, contemplate the long history of Kyoto Imperial Palace, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, and go for a walk through Gion.

Asheville, USA to Kyoto is an approximately 21.5-hour combination of car and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 14 hours traveling from Asheville to Kyoto. In December in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 52°F during the day and 39°F at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 31st (Fri) so you can go by car to Osaka.

Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Dotombori District and Osaka Castle. Popular historic sites such as Himeji Castle and Nigatsu-do Temple are in your itinerary. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Osaka: Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown) (in Kobe) and Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center & Nara Park). Grapple with history and appreciate modernity in Hiroshima, a city known around the world for its tragic past and inspiring rebirth.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Wed): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Senjokaku, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Itsukushima Shrine, and then look for gifts at Itsukushima Gekijyo. On the next day, make a trip to Peace Memorial Park - Hiroshima, then contemplate the long history of Atomic Bomb Dome, then step into the grandiose world of Hiroshima Castle, and finally take an in-depth tour of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Getting from Osaka to Hiroshima by train takes about 2 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of flight and train. In January, daytime highs in Hiroshima are 49°F, while nighttime lows are 36°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Thu) so you can travel to Kamakura.

Kamakura

Ancient City

The coastal town of Kamakura sits close to Tokyo, with the ancient settlement featuring a number of important historical and cultural sites.
Kick off your visit on the 7th (Fri): stop by Kotonoichi Kamakura, contemplate the long history of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, then contemplate the long history of Hase-dera Temple, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kōtoku-in.

Traveling by flight from Hiroshima to Kamakura takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. Traveling from Hiroshima in January, expect nights in Kamakura to be about the same, around 36°F, while days are slightly colder, around 39°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Fri) early enough to drive to Tokyo.
