Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Start off your visit on the 21st (Thu): get a new perspective on nature at Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato), contemplate the long history of Takayama Jinya, and then take a stroll through Sanmachi Suji. On your second day here, make a trip to Ogimachi Castle Old Site Observatory.

Sydney, Australia to Takayama is an approximately 15-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Sydney to Takayama. Plan for a bit cooler temperatures traveling from Sydney in April, with highs in Takayama at 20°C and lows at 9°C. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Ginkakuji Temple will appeal to history buffs. Do some cultural sightseeing at Kinkaku-ji and Nijo Castle. Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the long history of Heian Shrine, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and get engrossed in the history at Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design.

Traveling by car from Takayama to Kyoto takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. In April in Kyoto, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 11°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 26th (Tue) to allow enough time to fly to Seoul.

Start off your visit on the 26th (Tue): take a stroll through Insadong. On the 27th (Wed), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: get engrossed in the history at Gyeongbokgung Palace, then visit Bukchon Hanok Village, and then brush up on your military savvy at The War Memorial of Korea.

Traveling by flight from Seoul to Beijing takes 5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of subway, ferry, and train; or do a combination of bus and ferry. With a nickname like the "Pearl of the Orient," it's not surprising Shanghai offers some of the most rewarding attractions and activities in the Far East.
The Bund (Wai Tan) and Soong Ching-ling Memorial Residence will appeal to history buffs. Explore hidden gems such as Shanghai Museum (Shanghai Bowuguan) and Jin Mao Tower.
