The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Head to Dotombori District and Maiko Antiques Kyotofor some retail therapy. Visit Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Sanjusangendo Temple for their historical value. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Nara (Todaiji Temple Cultural Center, Nara Park, &more). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle, make a trip to Nijo Castle, and hunt for treasures at Nishiki Market Shopping District.
