Proud of their hometown's distinct culture and dialect, many natives of Osaka describe their city as "Japan's anti-capital." An antidote to Tokyo's hectic energy, Osaka marches to the beat of its own drum, serving as the country's longtime commercial and industrial hub.
Get outdoors at Nara Park and Chausuyama. Discover out-of-the-way places like Kasuga Grand Shrine and Kongobu-ji Temple. Change things up with these side-trips from Osaka: Koya-cho (Jokiin, Koyasan Danjo Garan, &more) and Nara (Nigatsu-do Temple & Nara National Museum). And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, ponder the world of politics at Mint Museum, admire the striking features of Tsutenkaku, and step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle.
