The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Venture out of the city with trips to Osaka (Osaka Shiritsu Toyo Toji Museum, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, &more). Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, go for a walk through Arashiyama, and hunt for treasures at Nishiki Market Shopping District.

Halifax, Canada to Kyoto is an approximately 23-hour combination of flight and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 13 hours traveling from Halifax to Kyoto. In December, Kyoto is a bit warmer than Halifax - with highs of 13°C and lows of 4°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 7th (Tue) so you can catch the flight to Tokyo.

Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Change things up with a short trip to Tokyo DisneySea in Maihama (about 30 minutes away). Have a day of magic on the 11th (Sat) at Tokyo Disneyland. There's lots more to do: don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu Shrine, ponder the world of politics at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings, get engrossed in the history at Edo-Tokyo Museum, and have some family-friendly fun at Owl Cafe Akiba Fukurou.

Fly from Kyoto to Tokyo in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. In December, daily temperatures in Tokyo can reach 14°C, while at night they dip to 4°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 11th (Sat) early enough to catch the flight back home.
