City of Sails
The largest and most populous city in New Zealand, Auckland combines a rich history and thriving contemporary culture in an abundance of museums, art galleries, and performance venues.Auckland Museum and Sculptureum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Head to Devonport and Pauanesiafor some retail therapy. Venture out of the city with trips to Piha Beach (in Piha), Hahei (Cathedral Cove Walk & Hahei Beach Walk) and Tawharanui Regional Park (in Warkworth). Pack the 15th (Wed) with family-friendly diversions at Rainbow's End Theme Park. There's lots more to do: identify plant and animal life at Tiritiri Matangi Visitor Centre, get impressive views of Mount Eden, get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, and enjoy breathtaking views from SkyTower.
