See more than 460 animal species at Ueno Zoo, the oldest zoo in Japan. Situated in a spacious public park, the zoo dates back to 1882 and features a monorail that will take you between various themed areas. You can admire a staggering variety of animals here, housed in enclosures that strive to imitate natural habitats. Meet the resident giant pandas, see the rare Sumatran tigers and lowland gorillas, view the pygmy hippos, and observe numerous other animals from all over the world. Ueno Zoo reviews
You would never know Japan is a 1st World Country by visiting the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. The Australian Kangaroos look sick and lethargic. The Penguins space is not bigger than my hotel room! The Pygmy... more »
The queue to get IN was bad. The queue to see the Giant Pandas was way too long at an hour (their estimated). We returned and it was worse. 3rd time lucky - way beyond Closing Time for the Zoo, so we.... more »
All-in-all it was a good zoo and a great experience (especially at ¥600). It's a good size but one can complete it writing 90 minutes, which is good so one can make multiple rounds or check back on previously inactive animals. The one thing keeping it from a 5 star experience is that many of the exhibits are just too small. They used vertical space well, but there were many cases where a cage could easily be expanded to allow the animals more space or let them hide if they want. Generally all the animals seemed healthy and happy but a few were getting stressed by the end of the day. Generally, though, it's a great way to spend the afternoon.
Great zoo with lots to see. The giant panda exhibit is fun, and the tigers, gorillas, and bears are always exciting to see up close. Compared to American zoos it is extremely affordable both in entry price and in-park food & gift shops. Some of the bigger African exhibits close earlier than the rest of the park, so make sure to hit those early in the day if you want to see Giraffes, Elephants, Rhinos or others.
