Kurobe Dam, Tateyama-machi

#1 of 79 in Parks in Toyama Prefecture
Dam · Landmark
Experience one of the most remarkable views of serene nature in the Northern Alps at Kurobe Dam. Listed as Japan's largest arch dam with a height of 186 m (610 ft), the graceful structure represents a daring engineering feat that claimed the lives of 171 people. Head out to the observation deck and hear the roar of gushing water as it creates a cloud of spray. Take a ride on an excursion boat to explore Lake Kurobe and observe the alpine plants, beech trees, and cold springs. The dam brings more than a million tourists each year between late June and mid-October, so plan your trip accordingly. Also, carry warm clothing, since the dam lies surrounded by 3,000 m (9,800 ft) tall mountains. • Very beautiful. You need to spend time here about 1hr if you want to appreciate it. The highest point to have a beautiful view require high climb. Prepare yourself well. Beautiful.
  • The fastest autumn red site in Japan. The dam is an impressive structure and apparently an engineering feat. Best if done in combination with other activities on the mountain. The price to reach the top or cover the entire Kurobe alpine route is quite high but the place is always full with hikers/tourist groups. To escape the crowds, proceed to the top of Mt. Tate from Muroto station of Kurobe route. This place is chock-full of people during Spring and Autumn.
