Stroll through the quaint Maruyama Zoo, with enclosures designed to help you get up close to more than 184 species in the park. Despite its relatively small size, you can see many animal favorites, such as bears, chimpanzees, wolves, and various big cat species at the zoo. Winter serves as the most spectacular time to visit, with thick layers of snow helping the snow leopards, penguins, and polar bears feel at home. Kids will have a ball at the petting zoos, with plenty of farm animals and even kangaroos to meet. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Sapporo holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Maruyama Zoo and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

This is the most depressing place ive been too and i would like to credit the animals, especially the birdlife, for not committing suicide. Built by people who dont value animals as having intrinsic..... more »

Small zoo but has some highlights: Penguin parade, polar bears, owls and many Hokkaido native animals. Some animals have small living spaces and don't seem very happy. more »

I must say I am not a big fan of zoos in general. But a friend of mine really wanted to here so I decided to tag along. I must say the zoo itself ifls made very well, will all amenities you could find. The collection of animals on display here are wide and varied as well. The staff are courteous and amazing as well.

It is really cheap to visit this zoo. I pay maybe 5 times more in Australia. It is a nice walk from the subway station, but if you are not a strong walker, you can catch a bus from the subway station. You can buy nice souvenir at a shop near the entrance, and they are quite unique. A part of profits is used to feed/maintain the zoo, so it is very good for both tourists and zoo itself. They always renovate the venue. When I visited, they opened a polar bear cage, and I was lucky to see mother bear feeding her cub. Many exhibitions are very unique and you can see animals are eating their meal. For kids, there is a petting zoo too. Highly recommend it.
