Former Shiba Rikyu Gardens, Minato

Garden · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
One of two remaining Edo-period clan gardens in the bustling metropolis, Former Shiba Rikyu Gardens affords serene respite and visions of a time long past. Originally built in the 17th century, the garden stood on the banks of Tokyo Bay and boasted a central pond of salt water. Disaster struck in 1923, when fire destroyed all buildings and trees after the Great Kanto earthquake. Thankfully, the garden was quickly restored and opened to the public. Spread across 43,071 sq m (463,607 sq ft), the manicured park offers plenty of space for a quiet stroll, with terrapins, carp, and little egrets (as well as some seasonal waterfowl) observable as you circle the pond. There are no amenities within the garden, so consider bringing a packed lunch and finding a quiet bench away from the city hubbub. • Small little garden tucked right in the city, it's 150yen to get in, well worth it. You would be surprised a garden like this is amongst towering buildings. Very cool stone, and rock bridges. Very peaceful with many spots to sit and rest if needed. Would recommend if you want to forget about the city for a moment. Saw a lot of people get in to just have somewhere nice for lunch!
  • Pleasant little garden, but still plenty to see. Also contains an archery range, which you can pay to watch. Or you can bring your own Japanese bow.
