Koyasan Daimon, Koya-cho

#4 of 46 in Historic Sites in Koya-cho
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Marking the western entrance to the ancient Shingen temple complex, you'll see the vermilion gate of Koyasan Daimon as it rises starkly to 25 m (82 ft) high. Displaying ornate woodwork, the gate is guarded by two fearsome-looking but benevolent guardian dieties, Lord Un and Ah. You'll see what the pilgrims of the olden days saw, as they ended their travels and arrived here, the headquarters of the Shingen Buddhist sect.
