Shiraito Falls, Karuizawa-machi

3.8
#2 of 159 in Nature in Nagano Prefecture
Waterfall · Nature / Park
See an impressive natural feature at Shiraito Falls, a wide and pleasant waterfall located within a national park. Considered sacred during the time of the Fuji cult of Shintoism, the waterfall stands out as a scenic highlight of the park. With a width of 150 m (492 ft), the main cascade drops down the face of a cliff in thin white streams. The falls themselves have a hidden-away air, thanks to an array of greenery shielding them. During your walk up to the falls (just a short walk from the road), you'll see several stalls selling a range of souvenirs and snacks. Take the guesswork out of planning a Karuizawa-machi vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

  • Visited mid-december so it wasn't greeted by a great view as expected. There really isn't much to see besides the small pond formed by the water trickling off the mountain soil (which is amusing on its own), so I wouldn't recommend going out of your way just for this. If you're driving past Karuizawa from the north or staying at Karuizawa, then this is a short drive worth considering.
  • Breathtaking in winter. It's smaller than I saw in pictures, but worth the trek out. There is a bus from Karuizawa station that takes about 30 minutes at 710 yen. Check times in advance as they come every 50 minutes. Honestly, I don't think most people would spend more than 15 minutes here. It's on the way to other tourist spots, so it may be worth making it a part of your day trip.
