Journey to the massive, picturesque temple complex of Shoshazan Engyoji, with ancient structures peppered throughout a densely forested mountain top. Established over 1,000 years ago, the complex remains lovingly preserved, and still serves worshippers and monks in training to this day. Across its sprawling site you'll observe huge temple halls with immaculately designed wooden architecture, filled with Buddhist artifacts and treasures. The site served as a shooting location in the Hollywood movie, "The Last Samurai," and it's easy to see why. Wear sturdy shoes to negotiate the uneven ground, and bring enough water for your trip. Use our Himeji trip itinerary maker app to arrange your visit to Shoshazan Engyoji and other attractions in Himeji.

  • BEES! OK, that's out of the way. It was the site for Last Samurai. Ok ok, seriously, it's a hike. 2 hours well spent exploring the older rustic areas, seeing how the buildings are changed, some of the teachings done there. It's a pretty, picturesque step back into the past. Be wary of insects, and you will be fine.
  • They said some of the last samurai scene took here. 30 minutes from himeji station. The place not so crowded.
