An impressive landmark of Phnom Penh, Independence Monument commemorates Cambodia’s patriots and war victims in the central part of the city. Featured on the 100 riel banknote, this impressive 20 m (66 ft) tall lotus-shaped structure takes after Angkor Wat, celebrating the country’s independence from foreign rule. Erected in 1962, with carved multi-headed "Naga" snakes bursting out of the corners of lotus petals, this red-brown stone monument stands as the centerpiece of a roundabout surrounded by a large park area. The ignition of a flame under the arch and frequent flower-laying ceremonies take place at the site. Get a close-up view of the guards by foot, or admire this well-lit, majestic structure at night from afar. Nice monument with fountains and nearby large grass park area. I do not believe you can currently climb into the monument as it was fenced off during visit. Many people will cross to walk around and nearby monument. Good for photos during the day and has lights at night.
